Carter Johnson – December 9, 2015

Last Thursday night was the kickoff for the Greater White Bear Lake Community Foundation that has been created to serve the communities that share the shoreline of White Bear Lake. A group of people who saw a need for a non-profit that could benefit local initiatives and priorities came together to establish the foundation.  The board is made up of volunteers from Dellwood, Mahtomedi, Birchwood Village, White Bear Township and White Bear Lake.

When an individual or a family has money they want to give to support their charitable interests, this community foundation can help by distributing the funds annually to numerous causes based on the wishes of the donor. This is the easiest way to give to multiple entities you love, unlike other groups that are specific to a cause. The foundation is not just a fundraising organization, but rather an asset management group for donors. Today some of the same individuals who didn’t initially support the idea are now founding members. The communities of Shoreview, Vadnais Heights and Woodbury have established community foundations in recent years. Though the kick-off event was an informational meeting with no financial request, one individual in attendance shook my hand and said he’ll be sending a hefty check. As you prepare for your future I hope you consider including the community foundation in your plans for charitable giving.
